Romans 5:10 - For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
Do you remember learning about negative numbers in math? We, the children of wrath, the sinners, were down in the negative numbers (here I have represented us as -3 but you can pick any number), not in relationship with God, and there wasn’t anything we could do about it. Then God sent Jesus to die for us. Jesus’ shed blood and death didn’t just bring us back to zero so we could work our way back into the positive numbers with God, getting in His good graces – this is how we would think; Jesus’ death and shed blood brought those who believe so far forward that we are in good standing represented here by positive 5. WOW!!!
And now, we rejoice because this God who did this, this God with such power, such love, such grace, and such mercy is our God with whom we have been reconciled! This is the God we get to call “Abba, Father” a most intimate term of affection used by a young child calling his loving father, “Daddy”; this is the God who hears us when we pray; this is the God who can do the impossible; this is the God who is working on our behalf ALL THE TIME, even when we cannot see what He is doing; this is our God whom we can fully trust with our lives, our children’s lives, our extended families and friends’ lives our jobs, our homes, our ministries and anything else weighing heavily on our minds. We are so blessed!
Merry Christmas!
